Diamond Education

COLOR

Color in a diamond actually refers to the lack of color. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has developed a grading scale which is based on the whiteness of a diamond. The highest grade possible is a D while Z is the lowest. The further down the alphabet the grade is, the more yellow appears in the diamond.

Most diamonds have slight tones of yellow or brown. The closer the stone comes to colorless, the more valuable it is. Keep in mind that how the diamond is set can influence its appearance as well. A colorless diamond placed in a yellow gold setting may reflect the yellow in the stone.
